At Stillpoint, we feel that classes, private lessons and massages are therapeutic and educational.  Our continuing intention is learning from the integration of our personal practices with our work with all of our clients and friends.  We continue to recognize that optimal learning states are present when our breathing is naturally deep (parasympathetic dominant) and there is just enough challenge for learning or relaxation to occur.

When we are in a sympathetic dominant state (fight or flight reflex), our nervous system is only able to protect against the threat to our wellbeing, as all human systems are on alert.  Threat, both real and imagined, inhibits breathing, freezes muscles and tightens internal organs.  By directing our attention to how we move, breathe, balance and relax, we begin to experience how to embrace challenges with intelligence, insight and compassion.

AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT®

Feldenkrais® ATM lessons consist of easy to follow movements that gradually evolve into moving with a greater comfortable range.  The emphasis is on learning that directed awareness coupled with our own inside sensing (experience of ourselves in movement) supports positive changes that feel good.

FUNDAMENTALS OF T’AI CHI

T’ai Chi principles integrate moving, breathing, and grounding.  The practicing cultivates ‘chi’, which increases the production of ATP, the energy which supports normalizing body function.  With proper breathing as we move, all systems are nourished.  Balance improves with muscle tone.  Slowly but inevitably the improved balance positively impacts every other system in us – including our mental agility.   “Concentrating the ‘chi’ reverses the aging process and restores youthful vigor.  This is the most important benefit of T’ai Chi.”   Cheng Man-Ch’ing

“In any action, the body should be light and agile, with all of its parts connected like pearls on a thread.  No one part should resist moving with the whole.”   Cheng Man-Ching

SOMATIC YOGA

Somatic Yoga inquires into how asana is experienced in relationship not only to ‘form’ but more importantly, to how it feels to move from the inside out.  Yoga is about focusing consciousness in action and in rest.  Somatics helps us to differentiate between beneficial sensations and those that may cause irritation or discomfort.  How it feels is primary – form follows function.

THE THINKING BODY HEALS THROUGH MOVEMENT

In our desire to change ourselves into someone else’s ideal image of who we should be, we relinquish our ability to learn the difference between harmful and beneficial ways of moving.  No teacher can teach that.  However, with motivation, curiosity and our innate ability to think, to sense, to feel, we come to understand the process.
